Soon after his first solo exhibition in New York City in 2008 with the legendary ‘Jack the Pelican Presents’, Tom Bogaert moved to Amman, Jordan. He began to produce a body of work—Impression, mena—that draws from his experience as a foreigner living and working in the Arab world.

In this lecture, Bogaert presents the current state of “Impression, mena” 10 years after the start of the project with a discussion of selected artworks from its previous iterations in Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria.

“When during the events of the Arab Spring a White European artist makes a film about the visit of an African American jazz musician to Egypt in the early seventies, is it an act of iconoclasm, pride, courage, ignorance, arrogance, appropriation or something else?”. By way of starting a conversation, this lecture will take up the task of answering this question.
